Bach’s St. Matthew Passion is his longest and most elaborate work, representing the crowning achievement of his sacred vocal works, and arguably, the culmination of all Baroque sacred music. Composed in 1727, Bach’s masterpiece is scored for solo voices, double choir, “ripieno” chorus, and double orchestra with libretto by Christian Friedrich Henrici (Picander). The St. Matthew Passion tells the story of the last days of Jesus, according to the Gospel of Matthew. In this well-known story, Jesus is betrayed, tried, crucified, and then buried. It’s a story filled with suffering, emotions, and ultimately love and faithfulness. Come along on the emotional journey with Colorado Bach Ensemble!
